Gift Recipient

The Gift Recipient trope is an evolution of the Charity Model of Disability, in which the disabled person becomes the recipient of a gift or gesture, which causes them to fall into the trap of having to passively perform gratitude. The gift that is given is either something the disabled person rightfully earned (such as a pay raise) or something everyone else already has (such as access). The gesture of giving a gift is a form of virtue signaling that is used to inspire audiences and elevate a person or a brand’s standing.
